They Have Lost

After much tumult in the Episcopal Church and after much blogging and after much work to reveal the lies perpetrated by the wingnuts in TEC, the Episcopal Majority declared victory and closed up shop back in May 2008. It was clear to me and my colleagues that the schismatics in the U.S. might still scream and hurl epithets, but that they had lost the battle for the heart of our church. They failed to gain traction among the majority of our church members.

I believe the same thing has now happened in the Anglican Communion.

Uganda’s Archbishop Henry Orombi has sent an hysterical, three-page letter to Rowan Williams, promising he will throw a screaming hissy-fit unless the Episcopal Church (U.S.) and Anglican Church of Canada are hurled into outer darkness. Matthew Davies has a fine story at ENS; click here to read it. You can read Orombi’s entire hissy-fit here. It’s pretty funny.

Guess what? Williams isn’t going to capitulate to Orombi’s hysteria.

People like Orombi and Mouneer Anis just look silly. I hope they will enjoy their GAFCON fete later this month. With each rant, they remove themselves further and further from the Anglican Communion.

I am more hopeful than ever that the Anglican Communion will retain its gracious generosity of spirit. God willing, the Communion will even reject the so-called Covenant.

Hysterical spokespeople like Orombi simply serve to show what fruitcakes live under the tents of Gafcon, ACNA, and the “Communion Partners.” Good for him!

Exactly...desperation, deceit, threats, denial of truth, limpminded attacks, slander and despotism...that stuff doesn´t work much anymore/anywhere at Church (including the one based in Roma)...Ahmanson ought have selected a less-alert denomination to plunder (or improved the quality of the talent that fronts him).

You may have put it a bit stronger than I would have, Leonardo.
But you also make a point that hadn't occurred to me: Ahmanson and his IRD made a mistake in targeting a group that is quite intelligent and well-read. He and his cronies couldn't hoodwink us as easily as some of the more fundamentalist goonies.

When we reflect on the actual faces of this border crossing/Episcopate/other trouble making group it is easy to see the mentality and face of the behind-the-scenes thinking:

Duncan, Iker, Schofield, Akinola, Anderson, Minns, Orombi, David Virtue, The Frim Standers and Little Stone bridge builders, PB Venables, ex-+Rochester and the small gangs of regional poachers harranging about their self-proclaimed purity in Canada and the U.S.

There is the face of the losers at it´s best...hostility didn´t win the day and putting down other Anglican Christians didn´t cut it no matter how much $$$ flows there way...the end message is clear, EVERYONE is welcome at The Body of Christ.

As for Bishop O., I guess the nicest thing I have to say is, "Sorry you feel that way, don't let the screen door hit you in the @xx on the way out."

And what a rich blessing that is, Leonardo: Hostility doesn't win the day. At least not in TEC. Maybe that meme works well for Orombi in Uganda. Lord, have mercy.

It's really rather, funny, isn't it, Maria? Orombi reminds me of a guest invited to a big ol' party, who throws a fit about others who are invited ... and all he does is miss the party and the joy that might go along with it.

Kinda reminds me of a story Jesus told, come to think of it.

Those who reject community ... They shall have their reward.

Just sayin', as a former Vet Tech....

Funny you should say that, IT.
When I read statements like Orombi's, I often have a visual image of a snake whipping around in a frenzy after it's been mortally wounded.

It is perhaps a measure of how completely they have lost that the authors of the Chapman Memo Strategy now deplore lawsuits. Oooops!

You win the memory prize, Jim. I had forgotten that part of the Chapman memo.

Yeah ... Irony compounds upon irony with these dissidents.

Don't be so sure about Williams not capitulating. He is a weak reed upon which to lean, and his urge to placate those who despise him knows no bounds evident to date...

Tobias, now that I've seen his statement to the Global South meeting in Singapore, I'm more inclined to think you may be right. Before, I maintained that the Archbishop had a spine.
