UN in Africa

I am on some listservs that keep me updated about news from Sudan -- including Darfur and Southern Sudan. I do not understand why the world is collectively yawning. God knows, the U.S. isn't yet doing anything like we did under John Danforth's leadership. And the nations of the world seem to be giving a big yawn, too. Which is perhaps why this image stuck my funnybone and my sorrow-bone.

No really, ya THINK?!?

Lisa,

I fear we are simply too focused on ourselves. We ignore Sudan's agony because we have troups at risk in Afghanistan and Iraq, because we are seeing 7% unemployment, because the economy is deflating and because given our self centered view we are more worried about ourselves.

People are starving in Sudan, but hey someone may loose an underwater financed luxury condo in Florida. Guess where the cameras are going?

FWIW

It's true. So sad, but true.

Jim, I agree with the overall analysis in your comment.

But remember: It's not just that people are starving in Sudan; they're also being raped and macheted in Darfur and Southern Sudan.
