Speaking for God?

And speaking of those who presume to speak for God … This image is worth a thousand words.

What do you think Jesus would say to these zealots from the Westboro Baptist Church?

2/21 Update (with a hat-tip to The Lead): England has refused to admit Phelphs and his hate-mongers into the UK.

Did you see that Phelps has been banned from entering the UK?

I know these people are deeply disturbed, but their complete failure of any logic in what they do is so horrifying...

He'd say, "I hate to tell you this, but there is no Hell. However, in your case, I've been rethinking my position."

I made the grave mistake of visiting their website yesterday. The first thing I saw was "God hates you." It was a kick in the gut. Literally nauseating.

My God loves me. Just As I Am.

My God loves Mr. Phelps and clan too.

How does one, one who claims to serve the Christian god, become so filled and twisted by hate?

I know I should love him and pray for him. I struggle with that.

Ay ay ay! That is really mind-boggling, to have missed the most basic element of the faith so utterly and completely. Incredible!

These folks picketed my church six years ago. It was nauseating to see a little four year old boy carrying a sign with a crude drawing of a sex act with the requisite "God hates fags" under the drawing.

Glad the British did the sensible thing.

I'm starting to think that they are very cynical news-users with no morality whatsoever. I think religion is just a front.

Gotta put this in perspective. These people operate a business. Their business model is to make other people so angry they commit some tort against the picketers, and the picketers then file civil lawsuits to obtain money. The content of their speech and the name of their organization are entirely incidental.

--Susan, I am deeply sorry if I'm the first person who has shown you their website.

Ya gotta hate asbestos pumps to go there.

I regret the pain you felt.

Most (many?) of us have become insured (mostly) to the kind of vitriol that Phelps & Co. spew.

Lauralew, I didn't thing these folks could shock me. But they had a 4-year-old carrying one of those signs????

I am now officially shocked.

Actually, no. You did not "pervert" me. I had heard that they were rearing their heads again. I was just curious. I thought I had seen their site before but I don't remember having such a gut-wrenching, visceral reaction.

Their hatred is unfortunate. (How is that for understatement?) What is really tragic (and I don't use that word lightly) is how they teach their children to hate.
